Kelly Hu is adorable. During Salt Lake Comic Con FanX last week, Hu was featured in a panel to discuss her roles in movies and TV including X2, Scorpion King, and Arrow as well as her voiceover work on Phineas and Ferb and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Here are a few highlights from the panel:
Hu had a difficult time choosing her favorite character that she has played. She’s played a vampire, a sorceress, a mutant, and maybe even a regular human here and there. Playing the sorceress on Scorpion King was particularly fun because of the size of the film. Many people may not know this, but Hu played Dorothy Manzarek on Oliver Stone’s The Doors and that was a special experience to work with such an acclaimed director. And of course, being able to work with Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen on X2 was an amazing experience. Hu had a hard time choosing a character because she feels that she has the best job in the world.
Playing the role of China White on Arrow was pretty easy for Hu. She has a black belt in karate, and, for some reason, everyone wants to cast her as an assassin. So the transition to Arrow was easy. She loves the show, enjoys the writing, and working with the “pretty hot” Stephen Amell is pretty great. Regarding The Vampire Diaries, Hu would love to return to that show if she was asked. She had a great time and got to work with more “hot guys”. I then stood up to ask her a question about her favorite memories from a convention. Check out the video below.
Voice acting is kind of a new thing for Kelly Hu, so she has only been doing it for a few years. But she loves it. If she could only do voice work for the rest of her career, she’d be happy. No hair, no makeup, no hitting your mark. Apparently, she’s not great at always hitting her mark, so on Nash Bridges they would often put cookies on her mark because she loves cookies. Being able to work with talented voice actors like Rob Paulsen and Brian Bloom is so much fun, and it’s stunning how many voices these guys can do. They must have thousands of characters in their heads.
While filming Surf Ninjas, the cast was on location in Thailand. The food was so good and so cheap that Hu “ate her face off.” She would eat pad thai and coconut rice and eat from the street vendor carts and the big bowls that everyone would sit around and eat from. Most of the cast was getting sick and losing weight, but she started to gain so much weight that the director approached her because he was worried about the continuity of her character in the film.
When asked about her favorite actor that she had to kiss, Hu said that it might be Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson in Scorpion King. Typically, there you can’t see any tongue in a PG-13 kiss, but in take after take, The Rock was kissing with tongue. But she wasn’t going to be the one to stop him…
Kelly Hu was a great panelist. She was excited, happy, and positive about all of the questions that she was asked. And frankly, she’s beautiful to look at.
