Whitney the Wonder Wig Woman Presents: How to Curl a Heat Resistant Wig

Whitney the Wonder Wig Woman here! So you’ve got a wig that is unbearably straight and you need to curl it. And it’s heat resistant? Even better! But where to even begin?? Well, lucky for you, I know some secrets. 😉 Ok, they’re not really secrets because it’s been shared all over the YouTube, but I’m going to share it with you here and now!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Heat resistant wig
  • Hair ties and/or curlers
  • Vat of boiling water
  • Bowl of ice water
  • Towel
  • Wig head
  • Patience
  • Anti-Frizz Hair serum (optional)

Alright, let’s get started. There are a few ways to curl a heat resistant wig, but we’re going to discuss the “boiling” way. You can accomplish just about any type of curl with this way, and it’s easier on the wig itself. I bought my wig from Arda (www.arda-wigs.com). All of their wigs are heat resistant and fabulous. For this tutorial to work you need to make sure your wig is heat resistant!! If not, it might melt. And then you’ll be a sad panda.

The first step is to put the wig into the kind of curls you need. I needed small, tight, and frizzy curls for mine to accomplish the crazed Arkham Poison Ivy hair. That meant I would need to do a lot of small braids. For larger more wavy curls, you can use plastic hair curlers of your preferred size or just bigger braids. You can use sponge curlers, but they may not turn out quite how you want them to.

Once your wig has the desired amount of braids/curlers in it, bring a medium sized pan of water to a boil. As soon as the water begins bubbling, you are safe to place the wig in the boiling water. Very carefully submerge the wig into the boiling water for about 5-10 seconds, depending on the length and thickness of the wig. Next, quickly place the sopping wet and hot wig into a bowl of ice water. Submerge the wig in the ice water for about 20 seconds, or until it’s properly cooled. Take the wig out of the water and very carefully pat dry the excess water from the wig, then hang the wig somewhere safe to dry.

Drying can take anywhere from several hours to much longer. I waited a full day for mine, but once it’s fully dry, you can begin unraveling the braids/curlers from the wig. Once they’re all out, voila! You have a curly wig! To help prevent the wig from going into frizzy and gnarled chaos, I like to add an anti-frizz hair serum. Pretty much any brand or kind will work. You can even use olive oil if you’d like. But don’t use too much, otherwise your wig will be oily and gross.

You are now free to style your wig as desired. For mine, I burrowed dozens of rat nests into it to make it poofy and allow nature to enter and create a new home. Wear your wig loud and proud and make sure to take good care of it!

And THAT is how you can curl a heat resistant wig. Have you ever tried this process before? How did it go for you!? Let us know in the comments! ~Zabracus~

Nerds of Play
Through everyday and every night
No cosplay idea will escape our sight
We'll do them all and do them right
Beware our power, Nerds of Play take flight!

The Nerds of ‘Play are a band of 5 misfit cosplayers based in SL, UT that come together to create mischief, mayhem, and incredible cosplays. With enough cosplays planned to get them through eternity, these Nerds still manage to find time to fight through the water temple and train their pet dragons (Daenerys could learn a thing or two). They consist of an alien from another planet (or so he’s convinced) who is searching for the tardis (containing Karen Gillan, of course), an indestructible nerd-knowledge think tank who will mega evolve all of his Pokemon, a master sword wielding she-halfling that we can’t seem to get rid of, a borderline evil tech-scientist/engineer who is likely building a robot to take over the world as we speak, and an overly logical she-geek who insists on being ALL THE CHARACTERS, regardless of their gender or species (seriously, we’re a little worried about her identity crisis). Together they will take over the (cosplay) world, or at least their own fantasy worlds…. Find them here, on their official cosplay page (www.facebook.com/nerdsofplay) or lost somewhere in time.
